Repurposed Religion is a multidisciplinary performance piece by artist Preston Douglas Boyer. The 50-minute performance debuted in late 2023 and was later staged again during Frieze Art Week 2024, bringing together movement, original score, lighting design, and considered garment design as a unified artistic experience.
The performance featured three dancers performing a fully choreographed sequence to an original album produced specifically for the show.
As Chief Design Officer, I was responsible for the design and production of all costumes used in the performance, as well as supporting the overall visual direction to ensure the project maintained a cohesive artistic vision across stage, garment, and film documentation.
PROCESS
All garments were designed and produced from Belgian linen, selected for its texture and natural movement on stage. I developed the bias-cut patterns, produced prototypes, and tailored each garment individually to its performer.
The costumes were finished using an in-house “overprinting” technique with water-based inks, layering prints directly onto the fabric to create depth and variation across the garments. This approach allowed the pieces to function both as performance costumes and as visual extensions of the project’s conceptual themes.
Beyond garment production, I also contributed to the visual documentation of the performance, assisting with filming and editing the final video presentation. My role included operating one of the cameras, editing the final footage, and creating the project’s title sequences.
